Langlais earned scholarships to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture for three summers beginning in 1949, a surprising twist of fate for the young man who had all but left Maine behind after high school. The Skowhegan School encouraged experimentation and independence, and students often explored the surrounding landscape and towns for subject matter. This picturesque view of a mill town may represent Skowhegan or nearby Madison, tucked between the lush hillside of the foreground and a painterly red sky.
